Three levels of checking
- Modelled
- Every ride starts here. It was built by the software from open map data, as described in how the rides are made, and passed the map's access check. No person has checked it yet. Most rides are at this level today.
- Checked on the map
- A person has looked over the whole route on the map and street imagery: the turns, the busier stretches, the climbs and the surfaces the data was unsure of. It catches routes that look wrong; it can't see the road on the day.
- Ridden
- I've ridden it myself. The ride says when, which way round and on what bike. A past ride shows the route worked then; it's not a promise about today's roads or a safety rating.
Rides will show their level on their page as reviews happen. Until a ride says otherwise, treat it as modelled.
When a ride changes
Rides are rebuilt when the map data is refreshed, and each ride carries a version. If a rebuild changes a reviewed ride's route, its review no longer applies and it goes back to modelled until it is checked again. A ride that fails the access check on a new build is taken down rather than left up.
Mistakes and corrections
If something on a ride is wrong, such as a closed path, a road that's busier than it looks, a surface that isn't paved, or a fountain that's gone, I want to know. The most useful report says which ride, where (the kilometre or a nearby place), which way you were riding, when you were there and what you saw. Email it to geoff@joyfulrides.com; the contact page has the details.
I read every report. If it holds up, the route or the map data gets fixed, and if the problem is in OpenStreetMap, the fix there helps every map that uses it.
Independence
Joyful Rides has no sponsors, no affiliate links and no paid placements. Nobody can pay to have a route, a café or a shop included, or to move a ride up the list. If that ever changes, I'll say so here and on every page it touches.
Photos and words
Photos on rides are real, openly licensed and credited, or my own. None are generated. A ride's description comes from its data; anything I add from riding it will say it's from me.
